New Zealand’s feijoa season is here, and Kiwis love this fruit more than Aussies do since it’s hard to find there. Let’s talk about why it’s so great and why you shouldn’t throw it away even if its skins are worth eating. Some people call it the ‘pineapple guava’. Do you know why? I first heard of this fruit when I came to New Zealand to visit my friend. I discovered that my friend had a feijoa tree in the backyard. Since then, after tasting it, I’ve been very interested in learning more about this fruit.

what are the health benefits of Eating Feijoas?

Properties and indications: According to the Healthy Foods Book by  Jorge D. Pamplona Roger, Feijoa contains small amounts of Fat and protein, and in greater percentage of carbohydrates. it is quite rich in Vitamin C. It also contains small amounts of B-group vitamins and minerals (folates, iodine), and vegetable fiber its composition is remarkable for these nutrients.

Here are its benefits:-

  1. The feijoa is beneficial to pregnant women because of its richness in folates, iodine, and vegetable fiber.
  2. Feijoas can help prevent goiter because they’re rich in iodine. Goiter is caused by hypothyroidism, which can result from insufficient iodine in the diet.
  3. Feijoas help prevent constipation because of their richness in vegetable fiber.
  4. Due to their richness in vitamin C, feijoas help to provide Immune system support, as they help the body make several types of specialized immune cells that guard against infection, improving the function of these cells.
  5. Feijoas improves skin Health since Vitamin C is involved in collagen synthesis and helps protect against damage from UV rays, promoting skin health.

For all these benefits, now I think the Ministry of Health in NZ should make this fruit mandatory…just kidding! But seriously, these fruits are so important. They only occur in a specific season once a year, typically from March to June. So why not take advantage of this fruit and enjoy its numerous health benefits?
